My name is Tonya Duncan and I am extremely excited to have obtained a
degree in Elementary Education. As a thirty-seven-year-old wife and very
busy mother of four children, I feel that the challenge of getting to
this point in my life is a huge accomplishment!
Born in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, I grew up the youngest of three
children. After graduating from Nicholas County High School in Carlisle,
Kentucky in 1989, I attended Eastern Kentucky University for five
semesters, but could not decide what field of study I wanted to pursue -
a Registered Nurse or an Occupational Therapist. Since that
decision seemed to be so difficult, I decided to take a semester off
from college. That one semester led to eighteen years of growing up,
getting married, having four children, and completing the Teacher
Education Program at Morehead State University. Now I realize that being
a teacher is exactly what I want to do!
From the
time I found out that I was pregnant with twin boys in 1996, I knew that
God created me to be a mother. I had two more children, both girls,
within three years of that time, and, except for being a full-time
student, have been a “stay-at-home mom” since. During that time,
however, I provided childcare for local school teachers in my home for
four years and was a Girl Scout leader for two years. Since 2004, I have
been a Director for day camp (ages four to 2nd grade)
and 3rd/4th grade week at Rolling Hills Bible Camp
in Mt. Sterling and have taught Bible classes for numerous ages at
Rolling Hills Church of Christ.
Before I
started a family, I was employed by Kentucky League of Cities,
Kentucky’s municipal league, where I held training classes for
incoming city officials of the state of Kentucky. Although I loved my
job then and have remained close with my former co-workers, I know I was
put on this Earth to be an educator. I am very happy with my choice to
become a teacher and am very motivated and excited to have my own
classroom, teach children, and hopefully be a good influence and role
model for them!
